Special Districts

The Special Districts Program is responsible for providing a way for residents to finance, construct, and maintain improvements for public infrastructure outside the limits of incorporated cities and towns. Special districts support public infrastructure such as roads, parks, lighting, stormwater, fire suppression systems, and more. The program is managed pursuant to special district provisions in Title 7 of Montana Code Annotated (MCA).

Special Districts in Lewis and Clark County primarily include Rural Improvement Districts (RIDs). However, the Special District Program does assist with administrative tasks for Rural Fire Departments and Fire Service Areas, assistance with information for Water and Sewer Districts, and other districts as needed.
