***EVACUATION UPDATE***

Effective July 15, 2024 at 1pm all Evacuation Orders will transition to Evacuation Warning status. Under evacuation warning, residents should be prepared to leave if conditions change.

  • Residents are allowed into properties including temporary RV residents.
  • Public campgrounds remain closed.
  • Heavy fire traffic continues on all roads. Please stay on your property. Only travel if necessary to include to/from work, groceries, Dr. apts etc.
  • All residents need to STAY AWAY from the fire at ALL times. Unauthorized individuals found off property or in fire area will be cited.
  • Canyon Ferry Rd closed to through traffic.

Incident History

The Horse Gulch Fire was first reported the afternoon of July 9, 2024. It grew rapidly on both July 10 and 11. The fire is located about 5 miles south of York, and 2 miles north of Canyon Ferry. Fire behavior has been very active and is in dense timber with heavy dead and down fuels. Northern Rockies Team 2 is currently in command of the fire. The Helena Lewis and Clark National Forest has issued a Closure Order for National Forest System lands around the fire area.

Temporary Flight Restriction

A temporary flight restriction is in effect - please do not fly drones around wildfires. Firefighting aircraft have to land if an unauthorized drone or aircraft enter the temporary flight restriction area thereby delaying fire suppression efforts.

Investigation

USFS are looking for any information that can help them investigate the Horse Gulch Fire start. Specifically, we are looking for any photos of the fire when it first started or any sightings of vehicles in the Horse Gulch area July 9. Please send tips to: SM.FS.HLC_Tip_Line@usda.gov

Sheltering

The American Red Cross has opened and Emergency Support Center at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, 3580 N. Benton St. in Helena, for those impacted by the Horse Gulch Fire. They will provide water, snacks and information. All Red Cross services are free.
