Welding Project

Project Description

The beginning-level project is designed for members 12 years of age and older by October 1st of the 4-H year. younger members may take this project under the guidance of a knowledgeable adult. It is recommended for use by 4-H members wanting to build, modify, or repair steel-based projects.

This project should take between three and six months to complete and may be repeated.

Learn how to find an area to work on your project, how to identify welding tools, welding safety, and decide on appropriate projects for the year. You'll also learn how to measure and mark materials, use a square, use a portable power drill, grinder, and more.

*** Please note, if you do not attend at least one workshop in your project area during the 4-H year, you will be required to complete activities in your project book and turn it in with your record book. The number of activities required to complete a 4-H year in each project book can be found here.

What needs to be accomplished to complete the first year?

• Understand level 1 which includes identifying welding safety, understand welding tools such as drills and grinders, and understand how to use and read measuring tools such as tape measures, levels and squares.

What needs to be accomplished to complete the second year?

• Demonstrate use of all the above and put them to work in a project. Demonstrate and understand weldments and the importance of good fitup and proper weld beads.

What needs to be accomplished to move on to the future years?

• Complete the project using all the above. Demonstrate a “stick-to-it” attitude. Show weld pride!

Project age limit? 8 and up

What should new members know?

• Welders will need the following:
  • Weld helmet, safety toe boots or shoes, clear safety glasses, leather welding gloves, welding clothes (top/upper body protection minimum), ear protection (plugs or ear muffs), grinding shield, and Shade S cutting glasses/shield
• AWG and General Distribution gives discount to 4-H welders
• No need to purchase top of the line gear! Basic is just as good as over the top.
• Z87= Safety and shields are conforming to OSHA standards
