Project Description

Veterinary Science is designed to help you better understand animals. Knowledge in Veterinary Science assists in the protection of human welfare by applying the art and science of medicine to animals. Inspection of meat and poultry, the care of all food and pet animals, controls for diseases that already affect humans, and how to safeguard our food supply are some of the things you'll learn. You are not required to own an animal to enroll in this project, but it would be helpful if you had one available to study

Project Books Required?: Yes

Veterinary Science 1: The Normal Animal
Veterinary Science 2: Animal Disease

*** Please note, if you do not attend at least one workshop in your project area during the 4-H year, you will be required to complete activities in your project book and turn it in with your record book. The number of activities required to complete a 4-H year in each project book can be found here.

What needs to be accomplished to move on to level 2?

• Learn the basics of animals as far as what to feed them, their heart rate, cleaning their cages or pens to symptoms of sickness of the animal.
• Please complete chapters 1-3 in Normal Animal project book.

What needs to be accomplished to move on to level 3?

• Learn more about the animals body, blood circulation and organs why they fail and how to help their intestines. 
• Please complete chapters 4-7 in the Normal Animal project book.

What needs to be accomplished to move to the next levels from here?

• Will start touching animals, hold organs, and seeing how each organ works in the animal body along with diseases. 
• Please finish the Normal Animal project book to more onto the next book. 

Project age limit? 8 and up

What should new members know?

• Dress warm and bring a notebook for lots of homework!
• We will be going over the basics of all animals from pets to farm emails. As well as dead animals to organs, blood/organs of what could be wrong with the animals.
• Buy the Veterinary Science 1: The Normal Animal book to complete chapters. The link can be found under the project requirements.
• Buy the Veterinary Science 2: Animal Disease after completing level 3. 

Workshops

• January 15th - 20th (TBA) at 1:00 p.m. Surprise Farm! Dress warm and bring books.
• February 8th at 5:00 p.m. at East Helena Library for game night.
• March 10th at 1:00 p.m. Meeting at East Helena Library.
• April 7th at 12:00 p.m. at the Swanson's Farm 5894 Shawn Dr. Rd. in East Helena.
