Sport Fishing Project

Project Description

Sport Fishing is a project made for Montana. After all, a river runs through it! You will learn how to make your own fishing tackle, experience the world of aquatic ecology, and explore the relationship between fish, people, and the environment. You'll also learn about casting methods, how to decide on the proper tackle, and much more.

*** Please note, if you do not attend at least one workshop in your project area during the 4-H year, you will be required to complete activities in your project book and turn it in with your record book. The number of activities required to complete a 4-H year in each project book can be found here.

What needs to be accomplished to move on to level 2?

• Participate in 9 learning activities each year over at least TWO years
• Complete and have reviewed record books for two years

What needs to be accomplished to move on to level 3?

• Participate in 9 learning activities each year over at least TWO years
• Complete and have reviewed record books for two years at level 2
• Do a presentation on some aspect of the Sport Fishing project and record in project pages
• Should be able to do basic fishing knots as described in the Sport Fishing handout

What needs to be accomplished to move to the next levels from here?

• Volunteer as a Junior Superintendent
• Teach one of the indoor meeting classes (i.e. Fly tying, Fish ID, Fishing Knots, etc.)
• Lead a group of 4-H fisherpersons during one of the outdoor fishing events (under adult supervision).

Project age limit? 8 and up

What should new members know?

• All members, leaders, families and anyone else attending the meetings near the water will 
• Wear a PFD (personal flotation device) throughout the meetings.
• Numerous drives to local fishing locations are conducted.  These locations are generally within 30 miles.
• Personal equipment is not required.  The 4-H Sport Fishing project has PFDs (personal flotation devices, fishing rods and reels and tackle for all members, families and leaders for use at each meeting.
• Personal equipment use is encouraged (PFDs, and Rods and Reels) as each person will become more proficient using the same equipment all the time, at meetings and on their own.

Due Dates: Project members must be officially enrolled in the Sport Fishing project in order to participate in workshops on or near the water (beginning sometime in May)
